Important Speaker Info
Speaker Slides/ Scripts/ & Stage Needs
Slides, if being used, MUST be created in Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides. Not Canva images dropped into PowerPoint but created using text boxes in PowerPoint.
A cohesive template will be used for all speakers and provided to you (expect to receive this in October from Hayley). As you build your talks, feel free to use placeholders but know all info will be dropped into a template for show time.
A full and complete script of your talk (with slide cues) must be provided to Hayley.
You, as the speaker, will not control the slides. Our tech team will be “clicking” for you when you’re on stage. You will have a monitor on stage that shows you what the audience sees but you will not have a clicker.
If you would like to bring items onto the stage with you, please let Hayley know those details. You can provide the items or Hayley can. Past examples include: items relevant to your talk (Alyson’s hiking items), a stool, a small table, etc.
Travel & Accommodations
If Hayley has not heard otherwise from you, she will assume you do not need a hotel room.
Plan to be in town Thursday night to Sunday morning.
Let's sell some tickets!
Tickets are out in the world. Please help us spread the word by posting on your personal platforms and tagging TEDxSpokane. The best place to send people for tickets is the TEDxSpokane website. Teamwork is dream work, let's sell out our new location on the Gonzaga Campus!
See sample social media posts below. Feel free to copy/paste onto your social media platforms.
Both virtual and in-person tickets will be available (but only in-person are on the website currently, soon for virtual!). The auditorium will be General Admission. All seats will be a first come first serve for guests and doors will open one hour before curtain goes up. You, as the speaker, will have an assigned seat (so I know where to find you).
Each speaker will receive two complimentary tickets. One for yourself and one for a guest.
Additional tickets can be purchased, early bird pricing ends Nov. 1, so send out that link far and wide.
Speaker Bios (Check Due Dates Below)
YOU are responsible for writing and submitting your personal bio paragraph for the website and printed program.
Bios should be between 200-300 words. Remember these bios are used on the global TED platform, your "resume" may not resonate with the global audience.
As a guide, you can find 2023 Speaker Bios here.
Hayley will be following up the week before they are due for reminders.
Attire for Stage—It is most important that you feel confident so take these notes as suggestions!
The backdrop to the stage is usually minimal, black, and red accents.—we suggest not wearing red.
Stay away from loud/ bright patterns, graphic tees, athletic attire, the focus should be on your talk not what you’re wearing. YouTube some of your favorite talks. The Speaker is often dressed in a business casual look. Dark denim, modest dresses, casual suits, etc.
You will wear your stage ready outfit to rehearsal too!
Talk Titles & Summary
Your title should be concise but exciting—you want to draw viewers in. Your talk ultimately will be a quick- thought provoking watch on the internet to get people talking not a doctoral thesis submission, sometimes less it more.
Hayley will be writing your talk summary for the program (so they have the same voice). You will get the opportunity to approve and make edits before printing. The talk summary differs from your personal bio. Please check out the above link as your bio should include some hints to your talk but not give away all the details.
Once your FINAL title and talk summary is submitted (for the program) we cannot make changes. These will be used in your YouTube submission to TED Global.
Additional Resources
Get Social
FIRST, a Word of CAUTION: You are not a TED Talks speaker until your video is posted to YouTube (around the end of the year). Please do not post about your “TED Talk” until given the green light (using that language). You cannot post ANY videos of your talk until YouTube is up. No practice rounds, sneak peeks, no stage snippets in January, stay away from ALL videos.
You can post about how excited you are to share your big idea on the TEDxSpokane stage! You can ask your networks to join you or support you by attending the event or sponsoring. You can post a photo of you and your coach or fellow speakers getting together to craft your TEDxSpokane talk. Please post about how exciting the opportunity to join the TEDxSpokane line up is. Etc. Using the language “TEDxSpokane” must be used, please do not use “TED” as a stand alone.
When posting, please tag and mention TEDxSpokane. Please make sure to note you are participating in TEDxSpokane as a speaker NOT TED Talks. There is a difference at this point. As long as you’re tagging TEDxSpokane anywhere you want to say “TED Talks” you should be golden (and no videos).
